Is disability a disease?

No, disability is not any disease. If not taken proper and timely care it may lead to several other diseases. It's a stage where a person is unable to think, act, and perform effectively to his/her environment because of impairment in their abilities.

What is mental handicap?

According to American association of mentally handicap, “MR refers to significantly sub average general Intellectual functioning resulting in or associated with concurrent impairment in adaptive behavior, manifested during the developmental period.” 

What is Autism?
Autism is a severely incapacitating lifelong disability which appears in the first three years of development. It is a syndrome with a combination of typical behavioural characteristics
What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cp refers to a complex non progressive condition caused by damage to brain within first three years of life that produces disability because of muscular in coordination and weakness.

What is multiple disability?

It refers to a condition where a person is having one or more additional impairment to physical, auditory, or visual function, or some combination of such impairments.

What are epilepsy/fits?

Epilepsy or fits is a condition characterized by jerky movements which lasts for 2-3 minutes. It is caused due to abnormal electrical discharge in the brain which gets generalized.

Another type of epilepsy is called petit mal which is characterized by short absence of consciousness lasting few seconds; the person resumes the original activity soon after it.

Is mental disability curable?

No, it is not curable because brain co-ordinates and directs various bodily functions  damage caused to brain is irreversible and abnormal developmental functioning of any part of brain makes an individual less able to adjust to the environment and give rise to various disorder. But early stimulation, intervention, and training help the child to learn fast and lead a dignified life.

How can a you find out whether your child is growing normally?

If you child:
  • Does not respond
  • Is slow to understand
  • Avoids company
  • Is lethargic
  • Concentrates for short time
  • Is irritable and restless
  • Looks different
  • Does not keep up with the children of the same age
  • Late in achieving normal developmental milestones

Can a person with mental retardation open an account in a bank or        other financial institutions? 

Yes, such person can open joint account in any bank. However he/she will be treated minor and the account will be operated by a guardian.
